Carbon footprint of a winery

The challenge

Avgvstvs Forvm is a winery located in the Penedès D.O., with a strong commitment to the environment and to the social development of the community in which it is rooted. Within the sectorial certification programme Sustainable Winneries For Climate Protection (SWFCP), it had to calculate the carbon footprint of the three scopes, both in the viticultural stage and in the winery.

The solution

To calculate the carbon footprint of the activities of the three scopes of the organisation, the perimeter of the system to be studied has been defined and an exhaustive analysis of the emission sources of the entire value chain has been carried out. The following sources of emissions have been included:

• Diesel fuel combustion in company cars.
• Direct fugitive emissions from agricultural processes
• Total electricity consumption of the organisation
• Transport of materials purchased by the organisation from its suppliers.
• Daily commuting of employees.
• Transport of waste generated by the organisation to the waste manager.
• Distribution of your products
• Water consumption
• Goods acquired by the company
• Final disposal of waste generated by the organisation
• Final management of the packaging of sold products

In addition to measuring the carbon footprint in the three scopes, a projection of emission reductions has been made, aligned with the 1.5ºC scenario, and a mitigation plan has been defined.

Value contributed

The calculation of the carbon footprint is a requirement of the Sustainable Winneries for Climate Protection (SWFCP) certification. By carrying out this study, the winery has obtained certification. In addition, it has been able to draw up a decarbonisation plan based on the potentials identified throughout the value chain.
