The challenge

Develop a tool to calculate the carbon footprint of a range of nonwovens products, taking into account their composition and production processes. The tool must comply with the principles of the ISO 14067 standard.

The solution

To address the challenge, a five-step work plan has been established:

  1. Product range life cycle analysis
  2. System modelling
  3. Data collection (energy, raw materials, upstream transports, auxiliary materials, waste)
  4. Determination of emission factors for each resource and process
  5. Calculator design and development

Value contributed

The tool allows the carbon footprint of each product formula or "recipe" to be obtained by simply entering the values of a series of production variables. In this way, the company's sustainability area can autonomously measure the product carbon footprint data and respond to the requests of its customers, who need it to assess the environmental footprint of their supply chain.
